Annual Check-Up Musts: Steering, Suspension and Stopping

Once a year, have your entire front end suspension and steering system checked. This includes shock absorbers, and struts and chassis parts, such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. You’ll need to have parts replaced if leaks, damage and loose mounting hardware are found.

Symptoms of worn suspension include uneven tire wear and excessive bouncing after bumps.

linings, rotors and drums. These pieces wear out, but they do so slowly. Without annual checks, you may find yourself facing higher repair costs or tapping the bumper of that guy in front of you.

Brakes work by creating friction, so they will wear out. The worse case scenario of neglecting this system is brake failure. But before they go completely ka-put, damage can be done to more expensive brake parts, such as rotors, drums and calipers.

A high-pitched squeal when you come to a stop is a surefire sign your vehicle’s brakes need some looking after. Rotors last longer than brake pads, but if your steering wheel wiggles in your hands when you come to a stop, your rotors are probably “warped.” At that point, it’s a good idea to get them replaced.
A thorough check up of these two systems just once-a-year could save you the cost of replacement parts and a tow truck bill.
